Summer-Orchid

A 60-Second-Portrait-type video that I created of my beautiful dog. I like 60 Second Portraits a lot, they seem to show personality in such a simple yet effective way.

Nighttime photography

I have been taking photos outside at nighttime, using available light and a slow shutter speed for a while now. I really like the abstract feel and how you don't really know what you will get until the photo is taken. These photos are fun for me, they are not something I plan on persuing for any other reason. I could show you a million photographs but instead I will just show you two very recent ones.

When I was taking this photo, I stood and waited for quite a while. I wanted to have all three colours from the traffic lights in the photo, as well as a stream of light from at least one car.

As well as light, I like to experiment with people in these photos. I simply set the aperture and a slow shutter speed and watched as people walked by. I love this ghostly effect.

Cuba 2012

During Summer 2012, I travelled to Cuba. I am fascinated by very different cultures to my own and I like to photograph poor countries, in the hope of spreading some awareness. Here is a selection of some of my favourite photographs from Cuba.

In Cuba, I came across a lot of old people that had found themselves extremely poor. It was a difficult thing to accept, knowing that in England the older generation are usually well looked after, yet these people seemed to be almost abandoned by their families and country. This lady is crushing up cans to earn money.

This man was incredibly polite. He was selling these hats for next-to-nothing and was so grateful if you bought one. I felt very sorry for this man, as you can see, he has no legs but it was inspirational to meet someone still so strong and independent despite an obvious difficulty.

This man was blind. He was banging on home-made instruments and singing a long in the hope of earning some money.

These people are not quite as poor. They were playing in a band on the street to pick up change and sell their CDs.

In Cuba, they renovate old American trucks to use as buses. People are crammed on and are jumping onto the truck as it pulls away.

In countries like Cuba, I have realised that there are families that will send out a disabled or deformed family member in order to get money through sympathy and pity. I believe this was the case with this man. He put on a big act of falling over and if you looked at him for long enough, he would have a peek to see if anyone was paying attention to him. However, these are still desperate people that need some money and it is still quite an uncomfortable thing to see.

I wanted to upload a happier picture from Cuba. This man wanted to cut my hair and had a very contagious laugh. I think that this photograph does have the ability to make you smile, which is refreshing because in a poor country like Cuba, it is difficult to find people that are laughing and are happy.

As an animal lover, Cuba broke my heart every day. Here is a horse that has been so overworked and malnourished. Unfortunately, this was not a rare sight. When a cuban invests in a horse, they will use it as a taxi service in season and to plow their fields out of season. The horses are their livelihood. To me, this is not fair.
